This is a children's story that I've been working on. Let me know what you think.
The Inventor
Once upon a time in a far away land there lived a kind and gentle king. His people loved him and his kingdom flourished with wealth and good nature. He had one daughter that was by far the most beautiful in the land and she worshipped the ground her father walked on. Everyone was happy and times were good.
Until one day all this changed. One of the most feared dragons in the land decided to move into the cave up in the mountain overlooking the good king’s kingdom. Every night the dragon would come down to eat his dinner. Anything in his path would be a prime target. Suddenly all the subjects were fleeing for their lives and could not leave their little houses.
The poor king did not know what to do. He sent his troops up to try to defeat the dragon, but they couldn’t even make it up the mountain. The king then decided to offer his daughter’s hand in marriage to any knight or soldier that could defeat the dragon.
Now news of the princess’s beauty had reached kingdoms far and wide and many princes and knights came to take on the challenge. But although many tried no one succeeded. It was starting to look like a very lost cause and the king was getting very depressed.
While all this was going on there was a little inventor that lived down in the village. Everyone made fun of him because he was considered odd; he went around everyday and collected everyone’s scraps to add to his latest invention. He was far ahead of his time.
When he heard of the king’s challenge, he became very excited and set to work immediately to create the perfect suit of armor to get him past the dragon. All the villagers would come by and taunt him as they saw him hard at work, and tell him about the latest defeat. The inventor never lost hope and continued at the same excited pace.
Finally it was finished and the day had come. He left his little cottage and ignored all of the villager’s teasing as he set out in his armor to climb the mountain. He was covered head to toe in heavy iron, he had wings on his back, and a mask with just a little slit for his eyes to see out. He also carried a heavy sword that was bigger than he.
He climbed to the top of the mountain and stood outside the dragon’s cave, “Come out dragon and fight me” he called.
The dragon came out and began to laugh at the inventor with rings of smoke coming out the creature’s nose. “I fought many, more qualified than you, how could you possibly slay me you fool?” asked the dragon.
The dragon began to lunge at the inventor and the inventor lifted up his arms and began to flap, he flew right over the dragon’s head. The dragon began to paw at him up at the sky. The inventor was quick and slid right under the dragon’s arm.
The dragon began to get angry and breathed fire right at the inventor, but it bounced right off the inventor’s heavy armor. “Fireproof” the inventor said smugly.
As the dragon tried to lunge for the inventor again, the inventor ducked under his tail and ran up in between the dragon’s legs, he then quickly propped the sword on the ground and with all of his strength pushed the sword into the dragon’s belly.
The dragon screamed in pain and rolled over on his back.
The inventor then took of his helmet and wiped his brow and walked back down to the village. All the villagers came running out of their cottages to thank him and cheer. The same men who teased him before now carried him on their shoulders to the castle to meet the king. The princess was standing next to her father and she walked down and gave the inventor the sweetest kiss. The kingdom was saved; the inventor married the princess and later became the king himself. He continued to work on his inventions in his own laboratory in the castle and they all lived happily ever after.
